Description

Duchesse de Bourgogne from Brouwerij Verhaeghe is the traditional Flemish red ale. This refreshing ale is matured in oak casks; smooth with a rich texture and interplay of passion fruit, and chocolate, and a long, dry and acidic finish. After the first and secondary fermentation, the beer goes for maturation into the oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of younger 8 months old beer with 18 months old beer. The average age of the Duchesse de Bourgogne before being bottled is 12 months.

Vichet, Vlaandere - BelgiumThe Verhaeghe Vichte brewery is a small family brewery with a history dating back to 1885, founded as a brewery-malt house by Paul Verhaeghe. While most Belgian breweries of that time sold in the immediate vicinity of the brewery, Verhaeghe was exported to the Brussels market. At the outbreak of the First World War, Paul Verhaeghe responded to the Belgian government's call to economically resist the German occupation by stopping production: The refusal to brew resulted in the dismantling by the Germans. After four years of inactivity, the brewery had lost all its customers in Brussels and faced the investment of completely new production equipment. After the war, the brewery remained at the regional level and adapted to new market trends. The first brews of bottom fermentation beer date from this period. The brewery has also focused on improving the quality of its existing beers. At present, the Verhaeghe brewery feels comforted in its previous choice: a little less, but better.
