This is one of the oldest beers of Westmalle Abbey, with a tradition that dates back to the start of our brewery. It was created to drink with meals in the abbey, something the monks still do today. As a top fermented golden yellow Trappist beer, the Extra is unique in combining a low alcohol content (4.8%) with a rich flavour. The production of beer in Westmalle is not a purely commercial activity.Most of the revenue goes to the brewery and is invested in improving working conditions. The monks no longer brew the beer themselves, but have entrusted the brewing to outside collaborators. However, they are still responsible for the general management of the brewery themselves.The part of the income that is not used for their own subsistence is devoted to charities, social works and people in need, according to the label "Authentic Trappist Product".
