Kwak is a top-fermented beer. It has a dark amber color and a nice white head. It has a nice malty, caramelized flavor and you can distinguish a slight bitterness. Kwak is made from three different malts and candy sugar is used in the preparation. Kwak is made at the Bosteels brewery in Buggenhout in Flemish Brabant. The name comes from Pauwel Kwak, an innkeeper who had a business between Mechelen and Ghent. During their travels, riders stopped at Pauwel Kwak's to quench their thirst and drink a beer made by the innkeeper himself. To make it easier, the riders were provided with a special glass that they put on their stirrups. The Bosteels brewery took over the concept and a "stirrup" glass was made for the Kwak. This beer is of course known for its quality, but we have to admit that the glass plays a certain role in the reputation of the drink. It is important to be very careful when tasting Kwak! As you drink, possible drafts can form in the glass and in extreme cases, the beer can come out in a single stream and spill on the drinker's face.
